In  June 2012 I advocated in this Lowy Institute Policy Brief that Australia should pursue an annual strategic and economic dialogue with China at the Cabinet Minister level. I regarded the Canberra’s political relationship with Beijing, which was far less developed than the economic relationship, as detrimental to Australia’s interests. (In April 2013 the establishment of a high-level strategic dialogue was announced during Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s visit to China.)
