  • In January 2014 I became an independent researcher. At the same time I took up the position of Visiting Professor at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. I am also a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy.

I study China’s foreign and security policy, with a focus on decision-making in China, China’s maritime ambitions, and China’s interest in the Arctic. I lived and worked in China for 22 years. Since 2011 and moving to Sydney, the China-US-Australia triangle has become a new research topic.

I am the founding director of the not-for-profit China Matters, a registered charity under Australia law. China Matters aims to stimulate a nuanced and informed public discourse about China’s rise and its implications for Australia.
